Ministries

Altar Servers -

Altar servers assist with the needs of the Altar under the direction of the clergy. Being an altar server is a great way to be actively involved with the church service and learn about holy Orthodox traditions.  For more information please contact Fr. Matthew Joyner.

Choir -

The church choir sings hymns of worship and praise during services. Vocal music is an ancient tradition of the faith and an integral part of liturgical services. Other activities of the choir include singing for weddings and baptisms, performing an annual Christmas concert, and going Christmas caroling.  For more information please contact Nick Lezinsky.

Christmas Bazaar -

The Christmas food-bazaar is an annual December fundraiser for the church. Parishioners lend their talents of making pierogi and traditional eastern European foods, as well as baking a wide variety of kiffles, breads, and desserts for sale. Please contact Fr. Matthew Joyner if you are interested in volunteering to head this ministry.

Christmas Tree Project: Southside Bethlehem -

South Bethlehem Historical Society hosts an annual Ethnic Tree Display to showcase the area’s history and
cultural diversity. We represent our Russian culture by decorating a tree with beautiful, hand-made Russian ornaments. The church school children participate by decorating the tree. For more information please contact Karen Gowarty.

Coffee Hour -

Coffee hour is a time for light refreshments and fellowship after Liturgy and is an important part of building our community. Parishioners support coffee hour through financial sponsorship and/or volunteering time in preparation of refreshments.  Please stop by the Candle Desk for information about volunteering at Coffee Hour.

Giving Tree Ministry -

During the Nativity Season, St. Nicholas provides Christmas gifts for needy families in the Northampton County Social Services system. Church members participate by taking tags off the tree and purchasing the gifts. The activity is sponsored by the Sunday School. Please contact Fr. Matthew Joyner if you are interested in volunteering to head this ministry.

Greeters -

Throughout the year, members of the parish volunteer to welcome visitors to our parish prior to Sunday Divine Liturgy. Visitors are warmly greeted and invited to participate in Coffee Hour after Sunday’s Liturgy.  For more information please contact Aliana Lungu.

Grocery Club -

This is an ongoing fundraiser where parishioners can help the financial needs of the parish by purchasing grocery store gift cards. This fundraiser currently offer gift cards to Giant, Weis, and Valley Farm Market. Giant and Weis gift cards are useful for groceries and purchasing gas. Landscape Beautification -

Improving and enhancing the appearance of the gardens that surround the parish provides a first impression of St. Nicholas Church. During the spring and fall you will find the garden caretakers planting new seeds, weeding and maintaining the blooms, which provide beauty and color throughout the year. Lenten Fish Dinners -

This event is held on several Fridays during Great Lent as a fundraiser and a way to welcome the community to St. Nicholas. Parish members are involved in all aspects of preparation and clean up. Please contact Fr. Matthew Joyner if you are interested in volunteering to head this ministry.

Library -

The lending library offers a variety of books on Orthodox topics. Examples include Bibles, Orthodox children books, scholarly discussions of the faith, and more. A sign out sheet is available at the library area, simply pick a book of your liking and fill out the sheet.  For more information please contact Jeff Markham.

Mother Karitina Card Project -

Mother Karitina of Holy Transfiguration Monastery collects new or used greeting cards to make her own homemade cards for the monastery. Volunteers from our church gather the cards that are donated by parishioners and send them to Mother Karitina several times per year. Please contact Fr. Matthew Joyner if you are interested in volunteering to head this ministry.

Parish Self Care (PSC) -

The bible tells us that we are to care for one another. Hebrews 10:24 reads: And let us watch out for one another to provoke love and good works. At different times in our lives we may find ourselves dealing with a range of issues related to health, aging, and or the inability to attend church. Parishioners who participate in PSC can offer support and service to others as a form of in-reach to our parish community.  For more information please contact Jeff Markham.

Paska Bread Committee -

Paska bread, an ethnic food, is a central part off the Paschal meal in many traditional Orthodox cultures. This group is dedicated to baking Paska bread which is sold to both the parishioners and the public during the Christmas and Easter seasons.  For more information please contact Maxine Marsh.

Pierogi Project & St. Nicholas Altar Society -

St. Nicholas Altar Society is the financial arm that donates money to help support the needs of the parish and rectory, led by the volunteers of the Pierogi Project. This group is vital in financially supporting the preservation of our parish, the house of our Lord.  For more information please contact Sarah Jubinski.

Prosphora Bakers -

This group prepares the bread called Prosphora, Greek for “offering.” The Holy Mystery of Communion, or the Eucharist, is embodied in the wine and leavened bread that are offered as the “gifts” during Divine Liturgy. These gifts, once consecrated in the Divine Liturgy, become the body and blood of Christ. For more information please contact Patty Felix or Stephanie Pasquel.

Revitalization Committee -

This committee is dedicated to growing the spiritual vibrancy and health of our parish to fulfill our Lord’s commandment to preach the Gospel to all nations. Russian Days -

This annual parish weekend fundraiser is a festival open to the public in September, showcasing many home-made foods and pastries for sale. Community members can experience ethnic music, purchase crafts, and go on church tours. For more information please contact Aliana Lungu.

Soup Kitchen -

As part of our parish outreach, members volunteer at the Lehigh Valley Council of Churches’ Soup Kitchen on the second Thursday of the month. This ministry is a great way to give back to our community and spread Christian charity. For more information please contact Nancy Kohudic or Donald Dudash.

St. Nicholas R.O. Church Parish Council -

This is the executive body that assists the priest in administration of the parish. The Parish Council is comprised of elected members of the parish. The Parish Council seeks to foster the spiritual and material welfare of the parish. For more information please contact Bryan Distefano.

Sunday School -

Spiritual education is provided for pre-school, elementary and junior/senior students. Sunday school classes are held following Communion on Sunday morning. Classes begin in September and continue until Memorial Day with classes and activities throughout the year. For more information please contact Karen Gowarty.

Treasures of Russia -

This store in the church hall sells a wide variety of items of the Orthodox faith, most of which are imported from Russia. Proceeds from this group are donated to the needs of the parish. Treasures of Russia is open year round.  For more information please contact Lori Lezinsky.

Young Adult Group -
